Sudbury Fiddler Returns Home With Canucky Bluegrass Boys

The Canucky Bluegrass Boys are one of four acts performing at Springfest April 30 at the Glad Tiding Auditorium. The band members include, Don Reed, Dave Dutton, Matt Naveau, Lee D. Roy and Red Nelson.

Sudbury’s Don Reed is a man of few words. He prefers to let his fiddle do the talking.

The three-time Canadian fiddle champion has just returned from Scotland, playing gigs with the country band South Mountain, to perform with The Canucky Bluegrass Boys at Sudbury’s first Springfest, which takes place April 30 at the Glad Tidings Auditorium.

While Reed is low key on stage, his name is legendary throughout Canada and the U.S. He has played on albums recorded not only by Springfest headliner Sylvia Tyson, but also with Dwight Yoakam, Tanya Tucker, Anne Murray, Rita McNeil and many others. Reed has performed more than 25 tours in Europe with various high profile acts.

The Springfest audience will not see a flashy display from Reed on stage. He rarely plays the same piece in the same manner — he plays from his emotional core. As a result, audiences are treated to original musical paintings of the heart.

The Canucky Bluegrass Boys have been chosen by the music co-ordinator of Springfest as the “energy act” of the evening. Performing just before Sylvia Tyson and Quartette, the band has been asked to pull no punches in delivering its hard driving traditional bluegrass songs.

The Canucky Boys have performed in the U.S. and are a force on the bluegrass festival circuit. A few short years after inception, the band won the coveted Vocal Group Of The Year award in 2009 at the Canadian Central Bluegrass Awards.

Band member Matt Naveau, who hails from Mattagami First Nation, scored big time in 2010, pulling in not only the Bass Player Of The Year, but also Entertainer Of The Year. Naveau’s love for music and his infectious enthusiasm on stage are at the forefront of each performance.

Along with Reed and Naveau, the band’s other members include Lee D. Roy on guitar and vocals, Red Nelson on banjo, and Dave Dutton on lead vocals and guitar.

In addition to Canucky Bluegrass Boys and Sylvia Tyson with Quartette, other acts on the bill include country/folk duo The Laws and multiple award winners General Store.
